Story of the Baby's Hand, ABOVE -
FOUR YEARS LATER
Why are we here?
Stephen Hawking states in his
book, A brief history of time, “We find
ourselves in a bewildering world. We want to make
sense of what we see around us and to ask: What is the
nature of the universe? What is our place in it and
where did it and we come from? Why is it the way it
is?”
He notes as civilizations
developed they observed that, “…the sun, the moon,
and the planets followed precise paths across the sky
that could be predicted in advance with considerable
accuracy,” and, “particularly in the last 300 years,
more and more regularities and laws were discovered.”
In one of the interviews Hawking
has given, he states,
“The universe seems to be
governed by rational laws.”1
Our knowledge of the existence of
numerous Universal Laws, (i.e.: gravity), have become
part of the complex of defining properties we use to
describe our scant knowledge of the universe. But
then, our still-limited knowledge quickly forces us to
resort to theories (both unproven and perhaps
un-provable in our lifetimes), such as the Theory of
Relativity, and the Quantum Theory, etc.
All of this still leaves Hawking with
the unanswered question: “Why does the universe go to all the bother
of existing?”
While the author of A brief
history of time recognizes the existence of
universal “rational laws”, he concedes that with
regard to the mystery of the universe, and of life
itself, we still have not been able to unlock the answers as to the
purpose, or the why, of our existence.
Hawking finished his book with
this: “If we find the answer [to why we exist] …it
would be the ultimate triumph of human reason –for
then we would know the mind of God.”2

Where are we going?
From inanimate
rock...
To reproducing,
single-cell,
living organisms...
To multi-cell,
conscious self-directing animate creatures, capable of
environmental adaptation, finding food (prey),
shelter, etc...
To (human) beings
that are supreme over all other species, by way of
advanced brain
function. As eons pass, they become capable of increasingly sophisticated thought
processes of
reasoning, contemplation and reflection. They become
increasingly more adept at shaping their living
environment to suit, rather than merely adapting to
the environment....
AND, if they/we
manage to avoid self-annihilation: we MAY develop into
becoming even more intellectually
enlightened humans, who socially evolve and progress
behaviorally through voluntary outreach of service to
others by way of a new spirit of co-operative
functionality. Imagine a society that operates through benevolent free enterprise, creating communities of thoughtful,
'golden rule'-minded development and expanded
consciousness.
Could it be that the
“purpose” of matter is to expand toward non-material
sophistication, meaning less dependence on matter and
more on mutually beneficial development towards thought predominance of
our
universe, or of some other unknown universe or
dimension?
In other words: Is the material earth/universe, our
‘training wheels’ for a higher plane of non-material
development?
